Through the links on the left you will find information about which filtration processes occur in slow sand filters, and how each process contributes to improved water quality. The first section explains flow rates, including Darcy’s law and how flow rates effect the microbiological and physical water quality. The following two sections detail the two main catagories of filtration process (a) physical/mechanical processes, such as transport and attachment mechanisms, and (b) biological processes, including the development of the schmutzdecke and biological zone.
