How long would you expect the filter to last, or how often should you change the filter? What signs are there that indicated a replacement of the filter?

The filter should last for years. The receptacle shouldn’t break, and the sand (if you chose the correct sand size) should not clog deeper than a couple of centimetres, meaning that with periodic maintenance (swirl and dump method) the flow rate is restored each time. So you should not have to replace the sand or receptacle hopefully.

The actual life expectancy for a particular water filter will differ with the type of unit, the brand, the quality of your water.
