Water Treatment for College Students

I am a student in Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University. I am very interested in water treatment for developing countries, and would like to gain first hand experience in that field. Does anyone know of any opportunities for college students in a technical field to participate in making or implementing sand filters? I am thinking of a time period of about three months over our summer break, but would be interested in spending as long as a year. Also, does anyone know of research that is being conducted in this field? I am looking for places to go to graduate school. Thanks.
